What to Expect in Individual Therapy
Therapy is hard work, whether it’s group therapy, couples/relationship therapy, or individual therapy.
In individual therapy, we will work together to find appropriate, achievable goals for you. We will chart a path for you to follow in order to meet your goals, and we will meet at regular intervals (preferably every week) to discuss your ongoing needs, process your feelings, and make adjustments to your plans and/or goals. It can be quite difficult to confront negative thoughts or patterns of behavior, and it can be even harder to change those things. Please know that even though therapy can be challenging, it is important to work through the discomfort and make changes so that you get “unstuck”. Before we meet, or in the early stages of our work together, I will ask you what your preconceived notions around therapy are; what you see as the problems/issues in your life; how you contribute to those problems/issues; how ready you are to change; and what is my (the therapist’s) role in helping you to meet those goals?
